HOORAY!! Make That *8* Provinces

Same-sex marriage comes to New Brunswick!

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/06/23/nb-marriage-050623.html

Mme Justice Judy Clendenning of the New Brunswick Court of Queen's Bench has ruled in favour of four gay couples who claimed that the current NB practice of opposite-sex-only marriage violated their Charter rights.

The ruling gives New Brunswick a 10 day grace period to get the new marriage definition into place.

Premier Bernard Lord has said that while he's personally in favour of the traditional definition of marriage, the province will not pursue this further in the courts or work against it in the legislature.

This leaves only Alberta and Prince Edward Island as provinces that do not have same-sex marriage; along with Nunavut and Bob, north of 60N. Nunavut, apparently, will recognise out-of-territory marriages (I'm a tad surprised -- an Ontario (frinstance) marriage should be recognised across the country).

Alberta will kick and scream, of course; PEI is more likely to go quietly (there may not be a test case there; it's certainly before the courts in Alberta).
