Chuck Taggart writes: "And boy," said Howard, "are we gonna have fun bringing you up!" :-)
All of us mourn the fact that we weren't able to "brought up" in God only knows how many subjects by Howard.
[Hearing that How had died...]
That night, I popped the only bottle of wine I had in the house -- a 1989 Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maipo Valley in Chile, which I had received as a gift recently. As I am still stunningly ignorant about wine, I have no idea what he might have thought of it, but as I drank it with my dinner, I enjoyed it, and thought of him.
As much as How knew about wine -- Robert Parker, move over! -- he was absolutely not a snob. Mike has already written this, but Howard was thrilled -- thrilled -- when he would find a wonderfully drinkable wine at Trader Joe's that cost all of $3.99. For Howard is was always quality that counted.
This summer I finally begin the Vintage program in my culinary studies at UCLA. I hope that, wherever he is, Howard finds the time to keep an eye on me.
As I just wrote Syliva, How is gonna be looking over my goddamned
shoulder for the rest of my life ("Are you crazy? You can't serve
that with the crab remoulade!").
