Steph Smith writes: As a member of the "20's down ages" I feel obliged to say that Ms. Abryn does not speak for all of us. Sheesh. John Lennon? Cobain was 28. He wrote unintelligible lyrics and shot a lot of junk. It's a pity and everything, but Lennon?
I'm 36, nearly 37. I was sad when Lennon died, but his death did not impact on me the way Cobain's has. I didn't expect Cobain's death to affect me, but it has. And his music has affected me, as have his sentiments in interviews. Someone mentioned that he had been beautiful. I think that he still was. The January 27, 1994 "Rolling Stone" interview with him was accompanied by a wonderful photograph, which has been hanging on the bulletin board in my study for 3 months. The photo is one of those where the eyes seem to follow you everywhere. And, Kurt seems to be gazing into my mind. I often look up at him from my work, or from reading soc.motss; on occassion I have spoken to him.
I haven't given a lot of thought to the comparisons to Lennon (or Hendrix or Morrison, who I think was more like Vedder is now). However, I think that Cobain's complex, metaphorical lyrics were nothing short of brilliant. Yes, on some songs his articulation left the content of the song unclear. But, this only makes "Smells Like Teen Spirit" a more powerful song -- the delivery becomes a part of the message. And the music itself...
I'm very sorry he is dead. To my complete surprise I have honestly
been mourning this man, who had apparently touched me more deeply
than I knew. I know that some of you do not like, or do not
understand, the music he made, but I hope you can respect him
nonetheless.
