Most research on the efficacy of various types of therapeutic intervention indicate that all are better than nothing, but that they don't differ significantly from one another in terms of effectiveness. Rather, it is the therapist, and the fit of the therapy to the problem, that is most closely related to the efficacy of treatment. So, a knowledgable, eclectic (and probably directive) therapist who molds the treatment to fit the issues at hand is going to provide the most beneficial treatment, albeit psychoanalysis or behavior modification.
