Key West

Sim Aberson, 26 Nov 1999

The best way to get to Key West, IMNSHO, is to drive from Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Key West is but a small portion of the beautiful Florida Keys, and the Overseas Highway is a beautiful way to spend a few hours.

Among the attractions are the ability to see Biscayne National Park and the Everglades National Park, Seven Mile Bridge, John Pennekamp State Park, the Hurricane Memorial in Marathon, Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge, Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, Pigeon Key National Historic Site, Looey Key National Marine Sanctuary, Boca Chita State Park, Bahia Honda State Park, and just the beautiful scenery on that drive.

Your article expired before I got a chance to see it, but what I've seen, you did not mention going to Dry tortugas (Fort Jefferson) National Park to see where Dr. Mudd was kept and to see some of the most beautiful coral reefs in North America. Snorkelling and Diving throughout the Keys are splendid, and you can also fish in the area. Last week, some cow orkers and I caught lobster, stone crab, and snapper, and had a feast. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible, and the air is clear, moist, and salty.

Two restaurants in Key West that are becoming very famous are Louie's Back Yard, probably the best upscale restaurant in Key West, and Blue Heaven, which is off the beaten path in the Bahamian Village. Outdoor dining only, incredible food and wine, usually with live music.
