I have bad news about Tom Merkel (tam@leis.bellcore.com aka tam@westmark.westmark.com).
I've tried to contact (via phone) everyone on the net that I know he regularly corresponds with, but I'm sure I've missed some people. Sorry if you were close to Tom and had to hear it here first.
On Thursday, August 19, 1993 afternoon, Tom Merkel passed away, apparently from a heart attack.
Tom was at the beach in New Jersey, having quite a good time, ironically, catching waves, riding his "Boogie Board". He was with his wife (Di) and his two daughters. He told Di that he felt "winded" and wanted to sit down. When Di returned to their beach-chairs, Tom wasn't breathing.
Tom's last days were very happy ones. He died while having a good time, doing something he enjoys, with his loved ones.
It is ironic that Tom's heart failed. He had a heart-attack about 10 years ago, but his doctor just last week reported that he was in very good health.
Tom was a regular on the net, in many of the bi/gay and AA mailing lists and newsgroups. He was always friendly and helpful.
We will miss him greatly.
The viewing and funeral are Sunday. Laura and I will be there. I hope you can make it too.
Some people from the activist/AA community are considering holding
an additional memorial service for him later. Send me email if you
